School of Sanctuary

Abercromby Nursery School was one of the first schools in Liverpool to achieve School of Sanctuary status in 2015. Since then, we have successfully renewed our accreditation in 2018 and 2022, reflecting our ongoing commitment to creating a safe, welcoming and inclusive environment for all. We are currently working towards renewing our accreditation again in 2027, building on over a decade of championing the values of sanctuary within our school community.

The School of Sanctuary award is particularly meaningful to us because its principles are at the heart of everything we do. Our mission statement, school aims and Abercromby Values all reflect our belief that every child, family, staff member and visitor should feel welcomed, respected, valued and safe.

We have been recognised for providing a nurturing and inclusive environment for everyone, including those seeking sanctuary. This may include people who have had to leave their home country because of conflict or persecution, families experiencing difficulties, or anyone in need of support, understanding and a sense of belonging.

Our ambition is to help children, families, staff and the wider community develop an understanding of what it means to seek sanctuary and to ensure that everyone receives a warm welcome as an equal and valued member of our school community.

As a recognised School of Sanctuary, we have also been privileged to support other schools on their own accreditation journeys, sharing our experiences and helping to promote a culture of inclusion across the city.
