Physical Education at Abercromby Nursery School

At Abercromby Nursery School, children have the opportunity to take part in a range of exciting enrichment activities, including Physical Education (PE). Our weekly PE sessions take place every Wednesday and are led by our specialist PE coach, Martin. Sessions are held in our Apple Tree Room or outdoors in the nursery garden when the weather allows.

Children participate in small-group activities that are carefully planned to develop their physical skills, confidence, and enjoyment of movement. Through a variety of fun and engaging games, children learn to improve their coordination, balance, agility, and core strength. Activities may include balancing on wobble boards, jumping over hurdles, target games with beanbags, ball skills, obstacle courses, and team games.

Physical activity plays a vital role in supporting children’s overall development and wellbeing. Regular participation in PE helps children to:

  • Develop an understanding of how their bodies move and work.
  • Build strength, balance, coordination, and motor skills.
  • Support healthy bone growth and overall physical health.
  • Develop positive attitudes towards exercise and healthy lifestyles.
  • Improve concentration, listening, and attention skills.
  • Boost confidence, resilience, and self-esteem.
  • Enhance mood and emotional wellbeing.
  • Encourage healthy sleep patterns.
  • Learn to work cooperatively with others and develop important social skills.
  • Explore games, follow rules, and develop problem-solving skills.
  • Support brain development through movement, including activities that involve crossing the body’s midline, such as climbing and coordinated movement patterns.

We believe that helping children develop a love of physical activity from an early age lays the foundations for lifelong health and wellbeing. Most importantly, our PE sessions are great fun and provide children with opportunities to challenge themselves, celebrate achievements, and enjoy being active together.
