At Abercromby Nursery School, we are delighted to introduce Concept Cat this year as part of our Communication and Language curriculum. Concept Cat is a research-informed programme that supports children to develop a deeper understanding of key concepts and language that are essential for learning, such as position, size, quantity, time, feelings, and comparison.

Through fun stories, engaging characters, practical activities, and play-based learning experiences, Concept Cat helps children learn and understand new vocabulary in meaningful contexts. Developing a strong understanding of these concepts supports children’s language development, comprehension skills, confidence in communication, and future success across all areas of learning.

We have introduced Concept Cat to further strengthen our focus on early language development and ensure that all children are exposed to rich vocabulary and opportunities for discussion throughout the day. By explicitly teaching important concepts and words, we can help children build the foundations they need for reading, writing, mathematics, and wider learning.

To support learning at home, new vocabulary and concepts introduced each week will be shared on children’s Learning Journeys. This will enable parents and carers to reinforce and use the same language at home, helping children to become confident and successful communicators.

Concept Cat Song

Children will also enjoy learning through the Concept Cat Song, which helps to introduce and reinforce new concepts and vocabulary in a fun, memorable way. Singing the song regularly supports children to remember and use new words as part of their everyday play and conversations. Research shows that songs, repetition and active participation are effective ways of developing early language and communication skills. Concept Cat encourages children to explore new vocabulary through stories, songs, games and practical activities, making learning both engaging and meaningful.
